A Montessori Gift Guide for Daycare and Preschool Teachers

A child's handprint in a Toddlers Handprint Frame, ready to give to a teacher

Every December, the same question lands in the parent group chat: what do you get the person who has spent all year wiping noses, settling naps and cheering on the first brave trips to the potty? A gift card never feels like quite enough. The best answer is usually smaller, and far more personal, than you would expect.

What should you get a toddler's teacher for Christmas?

Give something small that came from your child. A handprint, a framed drawing or a card with a wobbly scribble says what a shop-bought present can't: this child, this year, in your care.

It does not need to cost much. Here are three ways to do it, depending on how much time December has left you.

Gift Your time What the child does Best for
Toddlers Handprint Frame 15 minutes, plus drying Presses their own painted hand onto the sheet A keepsake from one child, or from a few together
Toddlers Frame 5 minutes Chooses a favourite drawing Families short on time, and teachers with a wall to fill
Handmade card 10 minutes Scribbles, stamps or sticks Alongside a class gift

Why does a handmade keepsake mean more than a shop-bought gift?

Because the child is the one giving it. Montessori asks us to let children do real things for real reasons, and a thank you is one of the first they can truly take part in.

A teacher looks after many small hands over the years. A print of one of them, with a name and a year written underneath, is something no one else in the room can give.

Toddlers Handprint Frame

Our Toddlers Handprint Frame comes with six non-toxic paints, a brush, a pen for the name and date, and four or five clear plexiglass sheets, depending on the kit you choose. That means a smudged first attempt is not the end of it. Allow about fifteen minutes at the kitchen table, then one to two hours for the paint to dry. For the full walkthrough, here is how to get a clean print.

What if you'd rather give something ready-made?

A drawing your child has already made works just as well, and needs no paint at all. Not every family has a spare quarter of an hour and a toddler willing to sit still for it in December, and that is completely fine.

Toddlers Frame

Our Toddlers Frame displays one drawing and stores up to 150 more behind it. Let your child pick their favourite, slip it in and wrap it. A teacher can go on to fill it with the next year's drawings, which makes it a gift that keeps being used.

Should families give one gift from the whole class, or give individually?

Either works, and it usually comes down to what the parent group prefers. A pooled gift can feel generous and can cover something the room really needs.

You don't have to choose between practical and personal, though. A few families can share one Handprint Frame, with a different small hand on each sheet, so the gift comes from all of them and still carries every child in it. If that is too much to organise, a small contribution to the class gift plus your own child's card does the job beautifully.

What's worth avoiding as a teacher gift?

Skip anything chosen only because it feels safe, such as another mug, candle or bath set. The other thing to avoid is spending too much: a thank you that costs a great deal can feel more awkward than warm.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Christmas gift for a daycare or preschool teacher?

Something small and specific that came from the child: a handprint keepsake, a framed drawing or a card they helped to make. It tells a teacher that this particular child, in this particular year, mattered to you.

Should a toddler's gift to their teacher be homemade or store-bought?

Homemade usually means more, because the child had a hand in it. If there is no time to make something, a shop-bought frame holding a drawing your child has already done keeps the personal part without the paint.

How long does a handprint keepsake take to make?

About fifteen minutes at the table, then one to two hours for the paint to air dry before the sheet slides back into the frame. Leave a few days before the last day of term in case you want a second try.

Should families coordinate a group gift for teachers, or give individually?

Either works, and many families do both. A pooled gift covers something practical, and an individual keepsake covers the personal part. A shared handprint frame can do both at once if a few families make it together.

What should you avoid giving a toddler's teacher?

Anything chosen only because it is a safe default, such as another mug or candle, and anything expensive enough to feel like payment rather than a thank you.
